The Corp’s Silent Drill Plt had performed preceding the Band.
The audience was encouraged to meet and greet Marines of the Silent Drill Platoon and those of the Marine band.
Needless to say, those Marines were extremely pleasant and vocal about their ‘jobs’.
I was chargined at the strength necessary to pull the operating handle of an M-1 to an open bolt position!
60 years after my first experience with an M-1, I was embarrassed!
In my day, I could whip an M-1 into inspection position and when the inspecting officer’s shoulder moved; to release my rifle for him to catch, QUICKLY!, before it hit the deck!

They begin at the lowest rank of SSgt. If you notice on the regular rank we wear there iare cross rifles. They have something different. They will never hold a leadership position in any other type of unit. They only stay with the band. From my understanding it has been a very long time since an actual trained Marine was part of this band.
