This reminds me of a time when we pulled into Sydney with the Antietam. My buddy, who was on Antietam, was getting commissioned to LDO the day we pulled in with them (I was on Mustin). One of the LDOs from my ship and I went over to ANT for the ceremony, but we were early. The OOD sent us to the focsle where they were have an all hands call. The ANT's CO came out furious because he had just got his but chewed by the Admiral because some Japanese fishermen had found some bags of trash floating around that had some laminated sheets labeled USS ANTIETAM (CG-54).

I hated, no loathed, the PWP (Plastic Waste Processor)! Now, don't get me wrong, I think it is a great idea, but the storage and implementation of the program was horrible.
As CHENG, it seems like everyday I went down there with SUPPO to tell the cooks they can's spray the thing with water when they are doing cleanup. It kept shorting out.
As far as the plastic disk, I know that some ports wouldn't take them from us. There is only so much storage room, and they smelled horrible. I know after a certain number of days without offload, you were allowed to dump at sea, don't remember what the regs were though.

An EM from my last ship (Mustin) told me when he was on Blue Ridge, they had a plastic waste shredder. All the plastic would be run through there to get chewed up and sent through a water spray. The result was clean uniform chunks of plastic that was then dumped into the PWP. He said they had ways less problems with the PWPs on Blue Ridge than on Mustin. I always wondered since then, why they don't install these on all ships.

SCPO (Join to see) - Space... The PWP was crammed in as it was, adding another piece of equipment would be very problematic. Although, I suppose you could run it through the scullery!
