Navy rule change for female service members' hair won't apply to Naval Academy midshipmen

While the Navy rule change allows for ponytails, locks and other hairstyles that extend below the shirt collar, female midshipmen must keep their hair length, when in uniform, above the collar. To comply, female midshipmen opt for buns, braids or shorter haircuts.

Seems like a misleading title, in that apparently Navy regs on grooming never technically apply to the midshipmen, but only because the academy has its own set of regs. My guess is that the academy will get around to changing their reg to match the Navy's. It would be odd not too, IMO.

Well.. Navy has their tighter regs, and there are those at Annapolis have pledged themselves to go
Marine at graduation, so they will sport the high-n-tights.. West Point has their’s and I s’pose there are those Looking to go Special Forces of some type.. And AF and Coast Guard has their’s..

When I was in the AF I liked a short regular haircut because after being in the kitchen and then getting home
My hair was so easy to wash.. I had guys worked with me who just barely
passed 35-10, let alone 30-1. One fella that wasn’t on my crew I would of liked to of gotten hold of kept his off his ears And collar with barely a 1/8” clearance. Well.. one day that came and I “suggested” he give his girl a break and go get a “real haircut”. He asked what I meant,
and I told him one that is uniform in length all around. When you get to the shop look at the Big standards
Chart on the wall... Well the Chief overheard and reinforced my suggestion.. He said he was only loaned to me for the shift. “That is true, but while you work on my crew you will be 35-10/30-1... so fix it..
his own crew leader heard what happened and so he didn’t want to look bad, he stepped up Finally and re-enforced what I and the Chief said.. (and he wondered why his APRs were lacking in Areas of NCO responsibility.. I interpreted that as
Seeing that those assigned to them should conform to all AF standards/regulations. I see it as being a ‘big brother’ and looking out to Make sure they don’t get in trouble with ‘dad’(those higher up in the AF) . and part was trying to
Make sure they did what the AF expected of them. For me to do that I had to hold my own self to higher standards. Some guys asked my why I push myself so much.. So I
Can set the example for our younger Airmen .. How can I expect them to hold themself to standards if I don’t..

Rules are rules, PO1 William "Chip" Nagel. The authority that makes the rules also determines to whom the rules apply (or not).
