Oh boy folks ... here we go... yet another move to purge a branch of the military, of it's long held traditions, just as what's being worked toward on the Civilian side of the Federal Government.
We don't need no stinking "Bill of Rights" or "Constitution" with all those pesky "Amendments" and other founding documents made over 220 years ago, by that collection of old Christian or at least largely Religious collection, of learned "Whitemen"... never mind that their work & our adherence to them down through the past 200 plus years, has made us the most successful Country ever in the history of the World. No more "In God We Trust", "E Pluribus Unum", ''Novus Ordo Seclorum" or any of that foolishness, regardless of how well it's served us all these years! Right.
So what's next? Will all the Services be amalgamed into a single entity, like China's People's Liberation Army, all wearing a similar uniform, where soldiers, sailors & airman are interchangeable?
Maybe it will be named something like "The Union of Federal Protectors of the American States" with Junior Enlisted personnel E-1 to E-4, Senior Non Commissioned Officers E-5 to E-9 perhaps & an Officer Corps that consists of Junior Officers O-1 to O-5 and Senior Officers O-6 to O-10.
Will there be any more Special Forces? Any Rangers, Green Berets or Seals? Will everyone in the military address everyone else as "Comrade" followed by their surname, without reference to Rank?
Nextly, will the Stars and Stripes be replaced, in keeping with the continuing purge of our past history. Will the "National Anthem" or "Pledge of Allegiance" or other "Oaths of Affirmation", be scrapped or at least not be the same one we have now! How do you feel about that?
Won't happen, Can't happen you say... Really! You look at the lawlessness that's taken place the last 8 years or so and you're going to say it can't happen. I pray you're right. But I believe the folks in our Government, both Civilian & Military have been testing the limits of our collective tolerance & seeing just how far they can go... Not so you say, again... I pray you're right... but I have my doubts.
And what of the Dept. of Homeland Security? We've been promised a Federal Police Force, more than once by the current Administration, could it morph into a Gestapo like organization? What do you think Herr Comrade?
I'm paranoid, delusional... Am I now? Isn't that what the German people thought in the 30's. If you believe it's "not possible", you haven't been paying attention. You best give some long hard consideration to who you vote for come November... particularly if you don't care for the way things have been going, or how you've been treated as a member of the Military for the past several years... and even more particularly if you're only in your first or second term of service and planning to make it a career for at least 20 years.
I'm proud to wear the Anchor of a Senior Chief Petty Officer and be among the long, long line of people that have worn it down through history before me. Anyone that tries to take it from me, had better bring their lunch... because they're going to be awhile at the "attempt"!
I'm also very proud of the many ratings I served in, Damage Control man, Hull Technician, Firefighter, Fire Safety Technician, Port Safety and Security Technician, Search & Rescue Boat Coxswain and Maritime Law Enforcement Officer. Over 34 years of education, training & experience, all of which translated very easily & quite handily to qualifications for civilian employ, which led to 45 plus year career in the Civilian Fire Service. I served in dual & nearly parallel Civilian & Military career tracks, and am damn proud to have done so! Without all the education, training & experience, garnered in the two Military Services I served in, I don't believe my success in the Civilian Fire Service would have been possible!

Thanks again SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. It seems that after over 200 years the Navy will be joining the other military services by simply referring to sailors by their rank instead of their duty rating.

LTC Stephen F. - Which one? PO1 Todd Cousins or Corpsman PO1 Todd Cousins? I'm kinda slow today.

PO1 Todd Cousins
Prior to this change an active duty corpsman was referred by the the title Hospital Corpsman 1st Class or HM1 for short. I would answer to PO1 or Petty Officer First Class as that was my payrate but my actual rank was HM1. The navy had names for both rank and payrate. As a junior enlisted we where HR, HA or HN then our NCO ranks where HM3, HM2 and HM1 then our SNCO where HMC, HMCS and HMCM. As a corpsman my rating badge was the caduceus marking us as medical personnel. Each of our major fields had such things. YN, PS, DC, etc. as a rate with petty officer 3rd, 2nd, 1st as a rank. As another example our Damage Control rate was DC3 for e-4, DC2 for e-5 and DC1 for e-6. Now they dropped not only our rates from our ranks but deleted them completely. Every sailor lost their rate, not just its use as a title, so all e-4's are PO3's. The history of having a boats, what a Boatswain Mates slang, taken away. The Hospital Crops is gone now a Rate that has been awarded 684 awards to include 22 Medal of Honor, 55 Naval Crosses and 237 Silver stars. A history that included every Marine beach landing of WWII. Of proud service across the history of our nations navy. Now a proud member of that rate looses their history and title to become a number. Worse is ours is not the oldest. Quarter Masters and Boatswain Mates can date their history beyond even our navy or country.

PO1 Todd Cousins - Many Army medics are also recipients of the nation's highest honor - the Medal of Honor as well. I would expect that based on lineage and honors the navy will incorporate the historic designations once the dust settles - at least I hope they do.
I would be interested in hearing the perspective from currently serving Navy NCOs.
