I bet you failed American History. You need to review the chapters betwen the The New Deal and the Civil Rights movement. The Democrats and Republicans switched ideology and platforms around this period. Here Endeth the Lesson.

I suggest you revise and edit your lesson plan. In every major Federal Civil Rights legislation since The New Deal, a greater percentage of Republicans voted yes as opposed to the Democrats.

Vote totals in "Yea–Nay" format:
The House Version Voted on by the Senate:
Civil Rights Act of 1957: Establishing Civil Rights Commission
Democratic Party: 29-18 not voting 2 (59%–37%-4%)
Republican Party: 136–35 voting present 1 or not voting 3 (93%–0%-7%)

Civil Rights Act of 1960: Establishing federal inspection of local voter registration polls
The House Version Voted on by the Senate:
Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%–31%)
Republican Party: 27-6 (82%–18%)

Civil Rights Act of 1964: Prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin by federal and state governments as well as some public places
The Senate version, voted on by the House:
Democratic Party: 153–91 (63%–37%)
Republican Party: 136–35 (80%–20%)
