Star Trek Voyager? YGBSM! It was a crappy show. Had to be Jeri Ryan's body suit. Sure wasn't the storyline.

Big of Two definitely gave that series (Voyager) a boost.

Disagreed. Grew up on Voyager, loved Voyager. Seeing a female starship captain, (alongside a female engineer, and other stem based female characters) was probably one of my first exposures as a child born in late '80s and was old enough to begin consuming media in the 90s, of a female leader in charge of a large body of individuals in a completely foreign environment, with no logistical, tactical, or administrative support from higher. While she didn't always make the right tactical decision, she always weighed her options, factor in what was best for her subordinates, and try to make the decision that was strategically and morally correct. This was an incredibly encouraging thing for young me to see every week, watching with my parents.

I enjoyed TNG as well, and loved Data and Picard, but in that series, most of the females were in administrative, HR, or emotional support roles--namely Deanna Troy, the counselor, Bev Crusher, the Doc, and Guinan, the...counselor who was also a bartender.

Though as an out bisexual since I was 8 years old, I did appreciate Jeri Ryan. She, and Jessica Alba in Dark Angel were key to discovering my sexuality. It broke my heart a few years ago to discover that Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew couldn't stand each other off set, when they had such amazing chemistry on set.

So here's my take on this phenomenon. Voyager is probably the most relatable Trek to a wider audience, simply on the virtue of its run dates. For my generation (unless you were a geek like me and watched Trek... well, always), DS9 and VOY were our teenage years, and VOY was much more Trek than DS9 (DS9 was a good series, don't get me wrong, but there's a few reasons we call it "Star Trek Lite"). Voyager gives all the Trek while being the staple Trek of my generation and relatable to the future generations more than TNG and TOS. Plus, most true Trekkies probably have the full runs of TOS and TNG in multiple formats (VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, Digitally Enhanced, etc), and don't need Netflix, or any other online service, to watch Trek to their heart's content. So of course, Voyager is more watched by the digital generations who don't own compendiums of TV series in an offline format.

And we won't bother mentioning ST:ENT. That series was... ugh. They should have just led with the Earth-Romulan War, not quit right before it started.

LTC (Join to see) My wife is a Trekkie. She DESPISES Voyager. She is of the opinion that it was just squeezing the teat of the cash cow one more time without regard for how curdled the product was. I am not a big fan of Star Trek per se, but I like Science Fiction. I am not really that surprised by the result. Aside from the Binge Watching that Netflix allows, it also allows for searching out specific episodes of a show and for reading a synopsis of each episode then deciding if it is worth watching. I personally like to go back to old shows whether on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or something else and watch the first episode, followed by the last episode. Just fun sometimes to see the beginning and the end side by side. On some shows you can really see how much they have evolved over time.

The problem I had with Voyager was that there was less focus on the heart of Trek... which is to say, an analysis of the human condition. It did delve into that sometimes, mainly in episodes that revolved heavily around the Doctor or Big of Two, but otherwise... it was Friends with a command structure. It wouldn't have even remained relevant if it weren't for having a female captain.

If you enjoy Scifi in general, may I recommend Black Mirror and Altered Carbon? Both are hands down amazing. Warning though, Black Mirror is...visually intense. When I was on the border, I showed it to my PSG in our downtime; he's a former Marine and an emotionaless badass, but when we got to a certain part of episode 3.6, I stepped out of the room, not wanting to see or hear what was coming up next, and warning him it was about to get f***ed up, and sure enough even he, an 11b Marine let out a noise of dismay. Black Mirror is intense.

Altered Carbon is good, and it's bloody too, but almost like cartoon violence.
