This is a good post. As Christians, we often forget that our faith is deeply rooted in the suffering of the weak at the hand of the strong. Our Savior could've come as a leader, maybe at the head of legions...perhaps the Emperor of Rome himself. Instead, he came as a tradesman's son; born in an outbuilding in a crowded ancient city, a fugitive from birth. As a man, Christ walked and lived among the wretched, the diseased, the outcasts, and the poor. True faith has about as much to do with comfort, wealth, and security as it does with the greed, arrogance, and self-righteousness we all too often see exhibited in a society that has been much blessed by God.

Now...here is where you and I likely differ.

Christ came into this world without a sword in his hand. His teachings did not compel the Disciples to convert the pagan or the recalcitrant Jew by force. He did not slay the Sanhedrin, topple the Temple, and wage guerilla war on the Roman oppressors. He preached of love, forgiveness, and the brotherhood of all mankind. He and his followers died for their beliefs without raising a hand to their own defense...there was no "Christian Spring" in Palestine, nor Greece, nor Rome. It's a matter of opinion (and fervent debate) as to what exactly took place in 312 A.D.; was it God that showed Constantine his sign in the sky...or was an adapt and shrewd commander and politician seeking to consolidate support among his followers? God knows. What is known is that the following centuries were written in the blood of many-some Christian, some pagan, some Jewish, some Muslim. It continues to this day, and almost always...it's the poorest (of all nations) who suffer the most.

Not everyone seeking shelter is a victim. Not all who flee oppression fight for justice. As the world's leading civilization, I believe we should be a refuge for the weak...but not a target for the malevolent. Christ would've looked little different from the Zealots of His own time and country...but His message could not have been more different.
