Pancho Vila versus John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing brings back images of the wild southwest in the early 20th century SGT John " Mac " McConnell. Grandparents were then able to describe what the battle cry Remember the Alamo meant to their grandchildren in the same manner their parents told them after the Alamo fell ion 1836. Throughout the 184os and 1850s Remember the Alamo was rally cry against the tyranny of Mexico.
We got away with referring to the American Expeditionary Forces in the Spanish American War, the Pancho Villa Expedition, WWI, and WWII just like we could openly talk about a crusade as a good thing.
Can you imagine the outcry if we had described the forces in Desert Storm, OEF and OIF as American Expeditionary Forces?

Participants in Desert Storm, OIF and OEF are awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, so in a sense they are considered expeditionary forces, just not loudly and publicly with a purpose.

I take issue with some of the contents, but a very good article nonetheless.
