I had no clue there are so many stories about Vietnam vets retuning to Vietnam to help the people with problems and make amends. This s is a great story. More on the way.

One other project that Pete Peterson introduced to Vietnam that the BBC failed to mention was providing bicycle helmets for young people. Head injuries from motorcycle accidents was the top cause of traffic fatalities when we were there 1998-2001, and this project helped reduce the number considerably.

I had the honor of working for Pete Peterson as the consul general in Ho Chi Minh City--the first U.S. consul general in that city. The swimming initiative was just one of many things Pete shared with Vietnam as he sought to move us out of obsession with the past war and toward focus on the future.
