I wonder if they can be made too big to sink.

Torpedoes are incredibly short-ranged. I don't think ANYONE can sneak into torpedo range of a cluster of warships any more, not even us. As far as I know, they're really only useful against other submarines. As for threats coming through the air, I guess it comes down to a calculus of anti-ship missiles vs anti-missile missiles and other defenses.

Bombs and torpedoes didn't render battleships obsolete, carriers did. Well, the only threat that has those is China, and they're a long way off from being able to launch strikes from one, they're barely getting to mediocrity at fleet air defense.

I don't know why a ship that's 3x the size of a destroyer and 1/4 the size of a carrier is needed, maybe it has to do with the volume of space required for the equipment that runs the pair of lasers the Trump Class will mount? That's the only thing that makes sense to me, the larger missile magazine isn't a satisfactory answer on its own... What baffles me is that it will burn fossil fuel. I would expect a small nuke plant, especially with the power the lasers will need. Turning oil into beams of energy doesn't seem especially efficient!

Technology will be the winner here. In order to make sure, those representatives who fancy Chinese spy's need to be ousted from Congress.
