Sounds like Kyle has some real issues to deal with. I might have thought the same thing about a co-worker who ended up in jail on a business trip the night before a larger client meeting. What was he/she doing out clubbing before a big meeting? I would have thought that regardless of who it was. That is not the same thing as thinking my co-worker had it coming to him/her or they deserved to have their leg broken or that they deserved whatever they got etc.

One of the issues I have with sports, at just about every level, is that people in the stands, at the sports bar, etc. are far to invested in the game. Why would you ever confront a player on the court/field/ice/pitch etc. ? Fan is short for fanatic, I think that is a real issue for sports teams to deal with and people to search their souls about. Athletes work hard to get where they are, those in the stands out to watch and support their team and leave the nasty comments at home. That will not happen because sports is massively overhyped in our culture. Just look at what can happen after a team wins or loses a national championship.

I have checked out of most of following most professional and college sports because of the gross over investment we seem to have in it. It is unhealthy. I do follow my Tampa Bay Lightning and I enjoy a good baseball game but most of the rest I have checked out of. Sports has become a caricature of itself.

This is not about privilege, it is about people that cannot manage themselves, their mouths, their behavior because we, as a society, have allowed it to become the norm. The behavior gets worse and worse because the edge is always being pushed. What was not acceptable last season, a decade ago etc. is now tolerated.

He was specifying the "first" thing to come to his mind, not that he simply had the thought.

And while I agree sports (as many other types of entertainers) gets more attention compared to more evolutionary subjects, the bigger message is about covert racism, holding everyone accountable, and enforcing a higher standard as a society. This is the bigger statement in his article.

I see blacks and whites! That is a good thing. I am not privileged. Jesse Jackson has a lot more than I do.
