Our unit 3/8 Inf.4th Inf.Div.received as replacements ,what we called President Johnson’s 100,000 it was a cruel and dangerous way to fill the ranks due to losses in combat, having to break in FNGs is bad enough without having problems with marginal mental and physical limitations,it just becomes tragic, shameful political policy .

I knew that group as "McNamara's 100,000".
When the draft ended, recruiters had a real problem on their hands. In the early 1970's a great many recruits were younger versions of the guys who went to Vietnam. The Recruiting Command took a real hit when it all came to light. Their own personnel were corrupting the system, really scraping the bottom-of-the-barrel.
The recruit gets thru BCT & AIT - plenty of close supervision, very little free time - once they get to that first real assignment, they fall apart. The outpatient mental health clinic on Ft Hood was involved in more administrative discharges during the middle 70's than we could count - psychological and psychiatric evaluations had to be done.
No telling what all that cost the American taxpayer.

SSG Dennis R. - When I was discharged in 1968 the Army I joined just a few years previously had become weakened by racial strife, drug use, political protests so I can imagine what the 70s brought ,that war had many far reaching effects for the Military, took years to get back the professionalism and pride we once had,be well Brother

My section did an analysis on this in the spring of '69. The results were not good. General Abrams did not want any of that category assigned into MACV, but could not do anything overtly about it. I will not say any reports were faked, but,,,,
