All 18-year-old Americans receive a Selective Service notification. In the past, there was an option for women that said, "I am female and not required to register." With the ALL-volunteer military that the US has had since Vietnam, this is the choice that women select. HOWEVER, if a woman chooses to serve, she has an eight-year obligation from the moment she signs her first contract. Just like men, this can be in any capacity - Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard or IRR. But, the obligation is still there.

The Selective Service has no "mechanism" to Draft (Conscript) or even Register Women. The notice may go out, but it goes out blind. The law is explicitly written for Men 18-26 years of age.

Service (as opposed to Conscription) is a different issue. The Service Obligation (contract) is like any other Contract. The Selective Service Registration has explicit loss of benefits tied to failure to complete, which women are exempt.

PO1 John Crafton - I get that. My point is that there is an 8-year obligation for everyone who volunteers.

PO1 John Crafton - I am not opposed to requiring women to register. I am simply pointing out a fact that already exists. Selective Service is not a draft (conscription). The US hasn't had a draft since Vietnam. Selective Service is just registration of males, age 18-26, so the government has a list of eligible individuals for conscription if it is reinstated. However, it is not likely that it will be.

I don't see why they couldn't make it voluntarily for females to register at first.
