I have this in my library. Indeed, a very good read. I could not help but wonder the "what if" scenario. Had we fought the war as he envisioned, small scale, with a goal of establishing a solid, legitimate government that would place the well being of the citizens first, we may have not had the fiasco that we ended up with.
For any one that was in country, this is most highly recommended.
Thanks for posting it.

I read the article Sir,
My GYSgt's we're both two tours in Vietnam. That's what they told me.
I was informed, a country that is mostly poor may need communism. That we had a WW2 mentality of interfering due to a fear, or desire to prove a point. At the expense of America's finest.
That we won every battle. But, lost a war. Because, we could not get past our egos and shallow thought process.
I think it strange, we could apply my post to the many so called intelligent articles on ISIS, the Shia vs Sunni hate fest and our desire to not understand the religion/political system of submission.
Perhaps, our Generals will move to a smaller foot print with overwhelming support. Using drones for constantly monitoring the perimeter and as our persons move forward. It might save American lives and cause the enemy to fear us.
Have a great day LTC.

I agree with the smaller footprint and overwhelming support idea. Sometimes it overwhelming logistical support to a country rather than continuing to spread ourselves thin on the ground across the globe in places long after it is no longer the main engagement zone.... until our presence there makes it so..

We have given the island of Iwo Jima back to the Japanese. Does that mean that we LOST the 1945 battle? We won the Vietnam war. We achieved all of our military goals. We bombed them to the negotiating table. We left. During peace. Not truce. Peace. The fact that we chose not to support our ally and cowardly sat back and allowed our forces to be engaged is not a loss. The South was defeated on its own by the North. *AFTER* we had signed a peace accord and left.

Making a mistake in judgement and ethics is not a loss.

Tactical victories and operational success mean little when you have been strategically defeated. 17 years in Afghanistan and we are again relearning that same lesson... unable to gain the strategic success despite our tactical success.

In order to put a label on our “defeat” we need to first put a label on our strategy. What was the strategy? Legally it was to stop the spread of communism. The strategy of Iwo Jima was to stop the Japanese. As the Japanese are back in Jima **NOW** it doesn’t take away our 1945 victory. Communism failed when we left SE Asia.
