LTC Eric Udouj with the lack of strong leadership - and what leadership there is having a strong penchant for corruption (historically) on that continent, it is not a great surprise that this is occurring. We don't hear a lot about it because our eyes are focused elsewhere, but it would not surprise me to find, one day, that the vast majority of that continent gets taken over by extremist groups (outside of well established countries).
I remember a few years back my parish had a priest who was a visiting priest for a few years. He kept in regular contact with us after he went to Africa - Burkina Faso, to be exact. There was a period of time where his city was under attack by extremists, and being the only Catholic priest in town, he had to be hidden in underground tunnels. We did not hear from him for a couple of weeks. We finally heard from him after the "siege" of his town was over.
