Rumor was that a German U-Boat delivered a small amount of Fissionable materiel. Japan was being heavily bombed and the U-boat landed at Wonsan, Korea. According to the story The Japanese assembled and detonated a small bomb off the North Korean Coast. The Japanese have a lot of wild stories, but who knows.

The have been a couple of documentaries on the subject, and outside of producing Uranium, the Japanese seem to have be closer to the right track than the Germans, The Germans were heading at full speed down what is now know to be a dead end. Whether that was intentional or not is a matter of debate.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - But the Germans had the fissionable material. When Der Fuhrer killed himself they wanted the stuff enroute before Germany surrendered. I don't know how much of this story to believe and how much is Japanese sour grapes. North Koreas early tests (if they were real) were really small. The Kwang Tung Army, occupying most of northern China and Korea had become the heart of Japan. Japan had already been destroyed
