Chip, I may be conservative but I listen to NPR all day if my car does not have XM radio.
This was an interesting story. I have heard about Jewish Refuseniks not being allowed to leave.
My forefathers were Jewish. According to my uncle, The Jews we came from were from the Jewish Haspurgs area which I believe is now Holland. My Spanish/Jewish name is Rodezno. The name was once Rodez. He says the Spanish crown sent my forefathers to manage the gold and silver mines in Honduras/Central American area sometime before Independence from Spain. There are still remains of open pit mines which used cyanide to extract either the gold or silver. I can't remember.
Another Story about a Refusenik Russian Jew Ukranian who was in my California Officer Candidate School.
His name was Alexander Levitin. He lived with his parents in Huntington Beach, California. He had the California accent saying dude! all the time with a very slight Ukranian accent from coming here at age 11. He had blond hair and blue eyes. He was very educated. I don't know what degree he had but he was a flight instructor at the Long Beach Airport. He knew how to fly single and multiple engine pressurized aircraft as well as being rated to fly helicopters.
He and I both graduated from OCS and both went to Military Police Officer Basic at Fort McClellan, Alabama where we spent two months at USAMPS.
He later went to fly planes for the Border Patrol patrol/Homeland Security. He crashed on a mountain top in 2001 or 2002. He was lucky he was alive and called in his position from the crash site where he was rescued. He spent time in the hospital with a broken back. I met him at Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center where he told me he was being medically discharged from the Army Guard but still was working as a desk job with Homeland Security. I have lost touch with him since that time.

Neat! that is some impressive History. I just have the tiniest of slivers of Jewish Heritage. Lietz would be my Ancestral Jewish Heritage but GrGr Grandpa Lietz was Hardcore Catholic so obviously his part of the Lietz Clan were Conversos.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - I read a more detailed description of yours in another post but I didn't want to brag at that time. Now, this story is as interesting as yours and maybe mine has some historical merit. I want to know if you know more about my family. I guess I am a Spanish 'converso' which I think translates into convert in Spanish.

LTC (Join to see) - Yep, being a Converso can be much more advantageous to continued existence in times of "Progroms" but it isn't necessarily a free pass when you had crap like the Inquisition.

There were a lot of attempts over the years. There were discussions about chunks of Uganda and Arizona, of all places, to become the new Israel...
