Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen sailed an aux three master as close as 83°34′N. Plan was to sail as far into the ice as possible then drift with the ice flow. This happened in 1895. It can be done if one waited long enough and the ice moved in the right direction.
Of course the subject environmental doomsayers plan on sailing to the North Pole in clean water. Good luck.

True. Though several missions have tried over the past several years and have been forced back early due to unexpectedly thick ice. We'll see if this time they can make it.
