I was CONUS only, and have thus obv never been there. However, for years now, I've read of, seemingly, one instance after another of similar instances and or problems there. Clearly something seems awry over there, to generate that much noise, that, I think, goes without saying. Now, having said that, obv, there seem to be fundamental cultural differences between there, and the rest of Japan. Admittedly, I could of course well be wrong about that, I just mention that possibility, as there seems to be a pretty much unique predilection with such problems causing the reactions I've read about. Or, what also has occurred to me is that, given that the island apparently had all that happened there during ww2, and there's been ongoing presence there from here for all the decades since then, as I see it, clearly, the population seems to be extremely sensitized about the whole topic. Obviously, the population might perceive the matter as one on long long-term occupation, if you will, lasting, clearly, now, over seven decades since the end of ww2. Alliance with Japan notwithstanding, that, as I think about all I've read of the problems like the one mentioned here that have happened over there, would, at least to my mind, to, at least no small extent, basically underlies the whole problem, that's all I'm trying to say. Now, having said all that, clearly, there needs to be ongoing presence there, that much is a given. However, it seems to me that, clearly, either a combination of immaturity due to age, or possibly sheer rambunctiousness due to youth, is giving rise to such problems. In all likelihood, I'd be quite curious as to exactly just how many of the problems of the type described here have involved young svc mbrs away from home for the first time, exposed to a foreign environment, with all of the attendant potential social consequences that might, or, as evidenced by the sheer plethora of such problems I've read of there till now, would, evidently seem to be the case. I'd read a mention on here of svc mbrs being restricted to their installations, I think over the past few days, I recall reading something about that, due to yet another prior problem, I'd gathered. Clearly, such restrictions, while, of course, harsh, might well, seemingly, at least seem necessary, regrettable though they might be, that's my only point. I realize I could well be wrong, as I said, I've never been there, and can't know the day to day existence of the place. However, that, for whatever it might be worth, at least seems to be some of what I, at least, perceive as at least part of the underlying social psychology involved. I'd be eager for any thjohgts, clearly could be wrong, and by no means expect to be agreed with in full or in part, most certainly, many thanks.
