Panamanian flagged. Sailing from Russia (with love?). And its the Finns who are scrambling to protect the environment of the Baltic Sea and keep the crew safe. Is now a good time to talk about . . . (wait for it!) . . . Flags of Convenience? Would safety inspections and standards of developed, modern Flag State prevented this? Thanks for raising our awareness SN Greg Wright .

Good point, Commander. Someone commented on another of my threads (about the containership fire) that shipping companies worldwide skimp on crew and training because they rely on world government organizations to respond in an emergency. It's an issue that needs to be looked at.

It also shows the effectiveness of the Marine Insurance industry. Because cargo coverage is accessible and loss spread out amongst many stakeholders, there is no impetus within the industry to make improvements to make shipping safer. Thus, using flags of convenience flourishes in the industry. Both articles and discussions are excellent and timely. Hats off to you, SN Greg Wright .
