It doesn't sound like the movie actually is banned. I vaguely recall seeing it as a child but don't remember much about it.

The Uncle Remus tales are Americanized versions of West African Folklore, particularly tales of trickster gods. These Americanized tales characteristically show how clever tricksters are able to turn the tales on powerful oppressor, and were told by slaves in America, to their children, in order to teach resistance to slavery within the plantation system.
