I know this set off bad feeling between the US and Russia in those days of the Cold War. We had some of the nukes and there codes. Yes someone in Russia at that time had to answer for that accident. Good history.

SSG Leo Bell at that time I imagine "answer for that accident" in the USSR involved bullets, burials, and if the offending party was lucky, a funeral.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - From what I have studied and learned of the USST back in that time you are absolutely right with your answer

Whenever a submarine sinks many families are stricken with grief because in most cases the bodies have not not been recovered [unless it is in shallow waters]. In tis case 6 soviet submariner bodies were recovered during the CIA operation to retrieve intel.
This incident occurred in the early part of the Cold War very close to when Dr. Strangelove was released and tensions were high.
Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski
