Funny Open Source story. A few years back, I was transferred to the Air Force Special Operations Command. I wanted to learn as much as I could about my new unit before I arrived on base. Using open source information, I was able to learn about which aircraft they used, the different units on base and JSOC connection. Once I arrived, I was given a briefing classified as SECRET. We entered a secured conference room used for classified briefings, we had to surrender our cell phones and had to endure a 10 minute speech about classified material before they got into the subject matter.

When we finally got to the meat of the briefing, they spent an hour telling me stuff that I already knew. About 90% of the material I had already learned from open source information. I was silently laughing to myself as they solemnly passed on the secrets of the unit.

To this day, I am amazed of how much information is available and how accurate Open Source material can be.
