The Black Sea covers a small area and Russia insiders it their private lake. There’s not much maneuver space there so collisions are common. My first assignment in training as an Intel analyst for AF Intelligence was to determine the purpose of Russian military deployments to the western shore in 1965. The Russians claimed they were simply exercising their forces but the deployments occurred as
tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors was rising. I surmised that the exercise might be a cover for a Russian intent to attack Israeli and possibly
US forces in the Eastern Mediterranean. I recommended USAFE and 6th Fleet forces raise their alert condition to be prepared to counter any Russian offensive actions. That was done.
