Fortunately for me I have experienced all of the aforementioned confusing days, each was memorable in its own way and the time periods between them were very interesting..very.

Almost every day in basic stands out like that...or runs together. It takes getting distance from any of it to figure it out.

Very true. By the time they pinned on my Sergeant stripes, I had been through PLDC (first NCO training course at the time) and as an infantry soldier in a troop unit, observed the attitudes and behaviors of numerous NCO leaders, team leader through first sergeant. Regardless, at the same time I was feeling honored and full of pride for my accomplishment, I was also quietly thinking “oh shit, what do I do now?”
The first exposure to drill sergeants was shocking and memorable, to say the least. Resigning my commission ten years later lead me to that final day that felt like stepping into the void. Even though I had a plan to go to graduate school and into a new profession, the day was very weird, exciting and disconcerting all at once.
The day I resigned my commission, I was as clueless about what lay ahead as the day I took the oath of enlistment. Basic was a quick adjustment adapting to military life. Adapting back to civilian life took far longer.
