Can't imagine someone so full of themselves in war to put the value of human life over orders in a sutuation where the result could have been needless deaths and the derading of the orignal mission. Not saying blantanly disregarding orders should be the norm, but come on. Great read actually- true leadership right there.

If I remember my reading correctly, during the 1973 war in Israel, Syrian forces were in a good position from which to push ahead and take 1 or more important bridges in northern Galilee, but instead, they just stopped - because they had no explicit orders to do so and they weren't allowed to act on their own initiative. This was an important point in the defense of the north against the Syrian invasion.
