Thank you, my friend SGT (Join to see) for reminding us that the Battle of Britain began on July 10, 1940. At the time my future parents were teenagers living and going to school in London, England.
Initially the targets were military facilities. In September 1940 the Germans started bombing London.

My mother was evacuated with her sisters to Hatchlands estate for the duration of the Battle of Britain.
My dad's uncle, who was a BEF veteran of WWI, was killed along with his wife when a German bomb hit their home. They trained their children to be prepared fro air raids. One survived in a closet and another survived - the older children were out of the house.
My father went to school in London for the duration. They build an underground classroom for the students [under the playing fields] which lasted for two weeks until they got stir crazy and went back to the building. He mentioned assisting a teacher to put out a fire caused by an incendiary bomb which his the school room on a weekend.

1. The girls of St Anne's Convent School, out and about in the parkland at Hatchlands. My mom and one sister are in this picture, we think.
2. The grand house and surrounding gardens that greeted the pupils on their arrival at Hatchlands.
3. 1980's Bernard and Margaret Ford.

The First Day Of The Blitz.
"Archive footage and first-hand accounts provide an insight into the terror London faced on September 7, 1940 when the Nazis began the first of many attacks from the air."
