So if he had gone via the draft selection he would arrived in Vietnam in the Spring of 1970 at the very earliest if everything lined up correctly. They started withdrawing troops in July of 1969. So isn't what he said basically true, the war was winding down by then and it already considered ending after the Tet Offensive and Nixon became President on a platform of ending the war?
