I once did a volunteer job on a Liberty ship in Baltimore while I was in college. We were supposed to clean the ship up, instead we listened to stories from all of the merchant marines that were on board who had served in WWII. Unbelievable, and yes, they don't get anywhere near the recognition they deserve. One guy told us he had been on 3 ships that were sunk in the Pacific. We asked what the worst part was (we were young give us a break) and he said the 45 days he spent on an island. When he saw the confused look on our faces, he told us that he was pissed it took them so long to find them because they didn't get paid unless they were on a ship!

I'm with LT Brad McInnis. The attraction where I used to work has a WWII/Korea/Vietnam "Victory" ship museum right behind it. Most of the volunteers were people, or family of people, who served on Liberty/Victory ships. Their stories were amazing.
