I would like to add a fourth. There is a very strong tendency today for conservatives to disassociate from the days of slavery by laying it at the feet of the Democrat party (historically accurate) to avoid the fact that is was the conservatives of the day (not dropping party labels confuses this fact) that supported and defended slavery. It was the liberals of the day that disavowed slavery, legislated and fought to see it disappear. As long as we merely say that Republicans fought to end slavery and Democrats fought to maintain it, people with little understanding of history get lost in the party labels to see that surface analysis as accurate. To outright admit that Conservatives were the defenders of slavery is embarrassing to Conservatives

SGT Joseph Cabra, historically those that defended slavery at the time were conservatives. The progressives were those trying to overturn slavery. The conservatives wanted to maintain the status quo. The progressives wanted it changed. I am not suggesting that that view is held today by conservatives, simply that the use of party labels covers up that fact
