I have to give him a lot of respect for returning. He didn't have to do that and could have lived out his life in France never having paid for what he did. He is clearly guilty of the offenses he was charged with (based on the info given), but I think that it was a bit heavy handed and not really worth the expense of jailing him.

SGT David T. This is about what I think. OTH discharge at best, because he did desert, but 4 years in the klink? No.

SN Greg Wright - As there was no real harm done. People didn't die he didn't defect to the enemy I think a discharge in lieu of court martial would have been more than sufficient.

having worked on Ft.Sill where there is a detention center, they routinely process in/process out those who were AWOL without time in jail. I know that Rolling Stone wants to sensationalize the negative treatment of a Soldier, but this story is unique and the LT was made an example of but not sure why from the story. More of a reason to never use a military lawyer, they represent the command, not the SM.

All I can say is I'm glad I wasn't on the jury...that would've been hard as hell to go one way or another. This is about as far from "cut and dry" as you can get.

Depression is a difficult to understand disease and it makes otherwise rational people do some rather unusual things. I know... i battle depression every day

Hey SSgt!
I'm aware that you posted this about a year ago, but I too suffer from depression, among my various medical conditions, and I'm curious whether you've found a way to dig out if the doldrums - I haven't yet, and I have some very trying moments, but until now I've been able to bury the depressed feelings most of the time, but it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to not dwell on those dark feelings. If you've found a solution for yourself, would you mind sharing it (no details necessary) with me? Thank you for your service.
