SGT (Join to see), at OCS in 1972, we wore the old cotton OD fatigues and the cotton khakis. All the pocket flaps of each uniform were sewn closed (in the seam so as to be invisible). No one put their hands in their pockets because they couldn't. If the Tactical Officers saw pockets that were not sewn shut, something like dirt, mud, rocks or shaving cream filled the pockets fairly quickly. To this day, I don't like to put things in my pockets and certainly not my hands!

It is. We had a Chief who was notorious for sneaking up behind people and catching them with hands in the pocket. You definitely didn't want to be the one he caught.
