SPC (Join to see) - It's something that is deeply ingrained within us. Once, when asked at an interview for a tenure-track teaching position why I chose to major in such an "irrelevant" field as military history, I replied:
The short answer is that West Point wanted me to teach military history and since Uncle Sugar was paying the freight, it seemed like a no-brainer to me. However, the truth is, since the beginning of recorded time man's story is one of constant struggle to gain superiority over one's neighbors. All of mankind's advances in agriculture, science, mathematics, technology, finance--virtually everything--are devoted to that end. Frankly, ma'am, if you take war out of history, what the @#$%& is left?

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - Hi Dale. Your response here makes me remember what a co-facilitator and I were discussing in a domestic violence group at a county sheriff detention center: the ego. We said that the ego-self is never satisfied with what it has and always wants more. We discussed how the ego-self is always afraid that there's not enough to go around and that the ego-self always wants to make sure it has its "fair share." We were contrasting and comparing the ego-self with the higher-self that also exists within the human heart. . . .

SSG Paul Endes - Hi Paul. I think the main word in your post concerning why people have to kill each other is "FEAR!"

SSG Paul Endes - Paul, an ex once told me that, when primitive folks see primitive folks who are different, they say, "KILL!"

Austerlitz's historic town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone per the Wikipedia article.
