PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - You would enjoy reading the Quebec Act which the British enacted with the intention of inflaming anti-Catholic sentiment in the 13 colonies. It was a magnificent piece of legislation which eventually bit Great Britain in the rear as they had to make good on the promises it contained. To this day, Quebec continues to follow the Napoleonic legal tradition, unique in all of North Anerica.

Louisiana is still heavily influenced by the Napoleonic legal tradition as it was one a French Territory. It causes havoc in the modern era legal system of Louisiana today as many of those old laws are still in place

CAPT Michael W. Langston, PhD, DMin - While Louisiana may be influenced by the Napoleonic code of law, it is actually practiced in the province of Quebec to the point that it has its own Supreme Court to rule on the province's laws. What is more, cases which survive the Quebec Supreme Court do not necessarily set precedent for the rest of Canada.

This is another reminder of how gullible and feeble minded people were before they could explain things scientifically. Today, if you accused someone of witchcraft, you'd be a laughing stock. Children were deemed innocent years ago, and "magic" was believed whole heartedly by some because of the dominant religious beliefs without much understanding of science. As we are reminded of such things, we can only stop and be thankful for the age we live in today with technology, science, and forensics on our side!
