This is not completely acurrate, or it is at least incomplete. There are encryption mechanisms depending on which OSI layer we're talking about.

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint aren't they also still using some systems from the late 90s, early 2000s?
With all the scandals of the past decade, one would think (I know, there I go again) that this would be an easy fix. Or am I lost in a pipe dream?

SSgt (Join to see) - 1st, understand the enormity of the gov networks and systems which run thousands of services throughout. 2nd imagine an organization which has a specialized capability which only runs on a legacy system. That org makes repeated request for funding (which could enter into the millions of dollars) which never get approved due to other priorities. Not to defend one priority over another, but there is only so much money to go around. OPM, for example, was an antiquated system, but they are a rather small government org which does not have the resources one would find in the DoD to have the right systems, security personnel, admins, and not to mention new software. I assure you this is not cheap and it can't be changed overnight (try years).

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - I realize that, sir. I just think that it has been oversight to let it lapse to the point that it is at now. Granted, the cost is great, but continual upgrades should have occurred to keep expense down. Say, half of the systems in this office in this quarter, the other half in the following quarter. Something of a schedule like that.
I know you see a lot of the frustration, with your AFSC. I'm glad it's being addressed. I just wish it could've been done incrementally as time passed that way you guys weren't up to your eyeballs in issues. And its not for lack of trying, but lack of recognition of the seriousness of threat - especially since everything is digital these days.

It depends on other variables too. Even between branches, there isn't a complete ans consistent implementation of encryption standards. Most soldiers don't even digitally sign their emails.
