Although I am not crazy about this news source, it does seem like he was unnecessarily killed by police while taking two hostages in a bank claiming to have a bomb which turns out he did not have. Obviously he was suffering and the VA turned him away or threatened to have him arrested (surprise you?) while he was seeking treatment. I think he was having meltdown and its a shame he was killed when all reports even from the bank employees said he posed no threat. There are other news sources out here but this article was interesting to say the least!

I wish I knew, this kind of thing was my area of expertise for years. Law Enforcement and Psych personnel all seem to have abandoned the Veteran. It didn't happen at a VA facility so he was dealing with local Police, they would rather deal with him at a distance even if that means killing him. Their next call may be a traffic accident . They don't invest a lot of time on training for this.

I suspect that you know little more than I, and what we know comes from journalists. Some of what we know may even be tainted by propagandists who seek to vilify the police. I wish we could know and have confidence in what we know, so that we could make better decisions and be better citizens. Sadly, this is the result when confidence in and respect for journalists is lost. Situations such as this should at least serve to remind us of how important a free and truthful press really is in a free society. When journalism is corrupted, freedom is corrupted and we all lose...

Well said CPT Jack Durish I wish we knew more. I read some other news reports but they mainly talk about it from as a hostage situation. I am not one to vilify the police at all but sometimes I do feel they could use some more restraint. Not sure what happened after the ladies were released but I do know from what I have read is that they went crashing into the side of the building and killed him. We may hear more about this and Ill certainly be following it.

This is so tragic and why I-as a veteran-have become a mental health practitioner-yet-even with Post 911-GI Bill-it's difficult for some veterans to make it through school and find the career and the life that will make them healthy, happy, and successful. God bless all our current and prior military service persons and veterans!
