Here's a story of a Minesweeper that made it back from Dunkirk a few times. The ship is being restored but it is credited with rescuing about 5,000 people.

The USS Pirate, an ocean going Minesweeper My Dad, David R. McCarter served on in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII Before that He had served on the USS Trapper, another minesweeper.
