In World War II, the movie five came back describes five directors who went to war. These directors sometimes had to deal with the Pentagon as far as releasing the film. The movie Midway almost was not released. Admiral John Ford had to deal with pentagon Generals walking out of the initial showing one by one until he was the only person left. a copy was smuggled to Hollywood in the event the original was destroyed on purpose. I think George C Marshall finally approved its release but the majority of the generals were shocked at the realism of the movie and the gamble paid off because the film received rave reviews.

I always have mixed feelings about films like these. On the one hand, I worry about the operational details "given away" to potential foreign and domestic threats-On the other, I think it's about time the "romanticized" view of war is blown. Ultimately, it's probably not a bad thing for providing some perspective... and possibly imbuing some added respect for the very distinct differences in experience over there.
