Not to take away from the Article, but , Canada was part of the British Commonwealth during both wars, so technically, many Americans went to fight for the UK when they joined the Canadians. Self Governance and actual independence took about 100 years between both acts. Between 1861 and 1982, Canada was much like the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

There were many Americans of German, Austrian, and Italian heritage that returned to Europe to fight for the Axis powers as well, and until Japan attacked, and the subsequent declaration of war by Germany, there was moderately strong support for Germany in the US.
