SGT (Join to see), the novel "All Quiet on the Western Front " by Erich Maria Remarque is one of my favorites. It's WWI from a German soldier's perspective. The title comes from the last lines of the book which are profoundly sad:
"He fell in October, 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping."

I first read it in the 7th grade, and have re-read it many times since. I think that it's one of the best war novels ever written, although I'm also very fond of Solzhenitsyn's Red Wheel books, and Catch-22, which I found myself re-reading regularly when I was still serving, just to keep my perspective.

Not well at all. I saw a special recreation on the history channel. The Sioux and Cheyenne had Winchester repeaters. The cavalry had single shot rifles. The weapons tended to jam. They found bullet remains and cartridges and mapped out the battle.

Had to read in high school, hated it then, but went back to read while in the military and it became a favorite. Agree the 1930s movie is very good.
