My f-i-l served on one during WW Two in the South Pacific fleet. He was there when Japan surrendered, and slept thru it.

Not being Navy I'd never heard of town class destroyers, but I grew up racing town class sailboats. Even raced the Kennedy clan, beat them a few times too.
