I see the benefit but also can see how this might get out of control quickly.

I sometimes call it the unsocial media, due to what people say. It's a fine line between being passionate and being an asshole that many never figure out. I try to use a test on posts of "would I say it to someone's face" and although it's hard when someone gets irrational or personal with insults it's a start. Folks need to tone it down several notches because it doesn't bode well for us as a society when we resort to name calling, threats and similar. Once people figure out that they can be anything they claim to be they exploit it for their entertainment. I never found it entertaining to insult someone and some of the comments warrant a beating. It's never a good idea to be a braggart or outright liar either and the internet allows people to be whatever they claim to be. In time I've learned to weed out the "keyboard commandos" because given the right bait they will quickly disprove their false image. On the positive side one can learn much by reading posts and responding, provide all parties keep it real and they are legitimate.
