I have long argued for better retraining projects.
Example:
In 1963 I worked a cattle ranch in SE Washington. They ran about 500 head of cattle, 20-25 head of horses, had about 600 acres of hay, and 3000 acres of pasture. In the winter we had a crew of 4. In the summer we had an additional crew of 6 to 8. We had an almost full time farrier. And a mechanic.
Today, my son-in-law runs a ranch that runs about 5000 head of cattle and 3000 acres of hay plus an additional 3000 acres of other crops. Not sure how much pasture he has. In the winter, there is him and my daughter. In the summer they hire 2 or 3 additional workers. Two of them can feed the stock in the winter. In planting and harvest, the equipment they use are all computerized. Computers and GPS drive a combine. Very little human involvement. And, it is getting more so. My s-i-l told me they are looking at a system where they don't even have to leave the house to cultivate, plant, fertilize, and harvest.
This is just a small example of the changes we are living with. The days of simple labor are rapidly fading away.
We must have some system to move us into the 21st century by educating and training our people.

You're welcome. (ducks).
But seriously, this is why to some extent Andrew Yang may be a bit ahead of his time but this type of upheaval is coming and over time the types of jobs that ML and AI can replace is steadily increasing.

I remember an economics professor telling us a story.
A tribe of 20 able-bodied cave men and cave women cave men, all hunter gatherers needs 100% of the able bodied to feed the tribe. Someone invents the fishnet. Now it only takes 90% of the able bodied to feed the tribe.
Pessimists say "Oh no!!! we have 10% unemployment." But one of the unemployed makes bows and arrows to replace spears and clubs and another makes woven baskets to carry more berries. Now it only takes 80% of the able bodied to feed the tribe.
Pessimists say "Oh no!!! we have 10% unemployment." We can all see where this is going...
