I recall back in the late 90s that even the California Army National Guard was training up with ukrainians so it's possible that all the training over the decades and having an NCO core and thinking more like us has helped them have a cohesive military fighting force able to take the fight back to the Russians.

When I was flying FB-111s most of our targets were in Ukraine. Based on what I'm seeing today I'm glad we were never launched. Whole different scenario I know, but they're tremendous fighters.
