You practice in case the unthinkable happens and you have to be ready for that possibility.
I know one thing though. If the other guys launch at us, we should blow them all to hell.
And whatever madman started this, I am going to find in the afterlife and do terrible, terrible things to until I get tired.

I understand your first sentence...and your second sentence is exactly my point, and your third sentence...well, I will be your corner man, and carry ice, vaseline (for minor cuts), Vitamin E capsules for your blisters from smacking the bad boys around, and bucket for your rinse spit. On top of that I will bring Chocolate milk to speed recovery, Gatorade (the real kind, not the Pepsi inspired convenient Store brand) for hydration, and a towel and stool for you to rest on...in between doing terrible terrible things to the Madman.

There is no such thing as a "limited" nuclear War. You start throwing that Sh*t around, and the other guy is going to hit back with everything he has. Because you have already decided "If I can't have the Earth, nobody can." You actually think someone who has watched a whole city go up (oh, but we used Neutron Bombs...so the place will be ready for people again in less than a century.) losing hundreds of thousands of lives...is going to forgive and move on?
I hate when group think tanks...think about the unthinkable. There will be no winners in any Nuclear Conflict...and thinking you can keep it to a "tit for a tat" - we blow up one of yours, so you can blow up one of ours...is beyond Magical Thinking.
The only thing launching a Nuke for real means...is the gloves are off and you lose...and I lose. Jesus this makes me so mad. Which is what they first called this crap when they came up with it: Mutually Assured Destruction. Oh, yeah.
Can it work as a deterrent? Yeah, we have seen that for closing on a three quarters of a century. Could it work if we launch? Or they launch? Or anybody launches? No Way. You can't control emotions of people who know you consider them fodder for your political or territorial goals.
Man...I was going to go to bed. Now I have to think about how many times good people have to pay for fools actions.
