Old Ironsides will commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with canon fire and solemn music. Navy crews with the USS Constitution on Tuesday will fire one-gun salutes to mark when airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon near Washington, and a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Taps will also be played at the times when the two World Trade Center towers and part of the Pentagon collapsed as well as when United Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 lives and injured more than 6,000 others.

Good share! I would like to someday see that old warship, the USS Constitution let loose with its cannons. As an artilleryman- I am sure it is a sight to see!

I am glad about this. May all of you who succumbed to the attack on 9/11 rest in Eternal and Infinite peace. I could not love you-each and everyone of you more.

I'm not against honoring the victims of 9/11, but there is no naval tradition for a one gun salute. Normally, a 21 gun salute is given. Is there a US Navy explanation for giving a one gun salute?
