Here, 43d BG B-17E 'Old 666' battles Zeroes off the coast of Bougainville. Both pilot Capt. Jay Zeamer and bombardier 2d Lt. Joseph Sarnoski were awarded the Medal of Honor for this mission (Sarnoski posthumously).

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - I toured through one of these B17's at a vintage aircraft show in Fort Myers a few years back... I was amazed how tight everything was in the Bombay area as well as the tail gunner space... One had to almost be a midget to crawl into the rear gun turret... It did its job though and we can all be proud of that!
