Sad to hear being a platoon leader and likely the TC of an M1A1 didn't keep him alive. The citation doesn't say if they struck an IED, were attacked by anti-tank fire, artillery, he was up top in an open hatch or was dismounted at the time. Have to say our guys after DSDS thought the M1A1 was a protective cocoon with its reactive armor and over pressure ventilation systems. I know the insurgents later in Iraq came up with a way of defeating that armor; but it wasn't 100%. Just being in the vicinity unprepared when that main gun fired would leave anyone close by on the ground temporarily stunned. Courage Conquers, LT Rubado. See you on the other side.
