Thanks for sharing SFC William Farrell. Yes, I am familiar with the veterans benefits which were established after the Civil War concluded. Widows of Federal service members and later widows of CSA soldiers were authorized by Federal law to be awarded with a pension on behalf of the soldier.
In some cases Civil War veterans married women much younger that themselves.
In general, suicides were excluded from veterans pensions for the widows of the suicide.

No, SGT (Join to see) but in his case, he went AWOL form a Confederate hospital where he sought treatment for some malady and switched sides to the Union. He might have been eligible for some Confederate pension from what I understood of article.
