COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I placed this on a discussion thread last year, but I think it fits here also.
The USS Arizona (BB-39) was sunk by Japanese aircraft during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i on 7DEC41 and still rests in the berth where she sank. 1,177 officers and men were lost with the ship and “remain on duty” inside her rusting hulk. This memorial to her crew was built over the wreck in 1962 and I've visited it twice. It's a haunting reminder of the past and should prompt us now and always to be ever more vigilant, prepared and strong, especially in these most unusual and turbulent times.

Sir, a goal I have is to one day visit the USS Arizona Memorial. I have been to Hawaii twice, for our plane to fuel on the way to and back from Vietnam.

I have visited the Arizona Memorial a few time during the time I was stationed at Hickham AFB, HI during My time in the USAF. One building on Hickam AFB, HI still is pock marked with bullet holes from the Japanese attack on December 7th 1941. Also the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii know as the "Punch Bowl" due to its shape as an extinct volcano crater. There are many reminders of that day all over the island of Oahu in Hawaii. My late Father in Law was stationed i Hawaii with the Army prior to landing on Guam and Okinawa via landing craft. My Dad was also in the Asiatic pacific Theater of Operations during WWII in the US Navy and mostly at sea. He was also there for the occupation of Japan. During the Korean War He was stationed at Pearl Harbor and My Mom and I were there with Him. My Mother Aunt also was stationed at Pearl Harbor NS later when She was a US Navy CPO who spent 30 years on active duty.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs a coworker of shared the written testimony of his father who kept his experiences to himself for so many years after the attack Pearl Harbor. This man was onboard his ship when the attack occurred and saw significant carnage and loss of life. Late in life he came to the point of coming to terms with his experiences and put pen to paper to record his memories for his descendents before his memory failed him.
I hope and pray that all veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam come to peace with what they saw, felt, heard, smelled and tasted in their combat experiences and in the incredibly long nail-biting periods of inactivity prior to combat.
